The lowdown: 13-year-old Mo’Ne Davis has had a bunch of firsts recently. First, she made history as the first girl to throw a shutout in the Little League World Series, resulting in a victory for her team, the Philadelphia Taney Dragons. Now, she’s got a Sports Illustrated cover under her belt – the first Little League player to claim that prize. And she says amazing things to major news stations – her pull quote from her CBS interview was “Throwing 70 miles an hour: That’s throwing like a girl.” Basically, we’re obsessed with her.

The future: Though there’s been a lot of hoopla (deservedly so!) around Mo’Ne, we’re hoping that Sports Illustrated takes her success as a sign that women athletes should be given way more love than they usually are nowadays. (Check out an interesting response to SI here, calling them out on a history of missing the ball on that.) Either way, though, she’s got enough fire on her own.
